I have an 88 300SEL with 60,000 miles. It stalls after starting, sometimes twice43. then it idles rough for a few seconds. sometimes it feels rough on acceleration. My independant mechanic has tried swapping the fuel distributor and had sent the injectors out for cleaning and replaced the fuel filter. Nothing has helped so far. Any ideas?

Hi,
Has your Mechanic done a fuel pressure test? It's a fairly well know proceedure to anyone that works on CIS or CIS-E fuel systems. It sounds like a fuel pressure problem.
If the pressure test shows no loss of fuel pressure, the injectors are the next logical step. You need to find someone that will test the injectors for leakage and spray pattern. Usually the failure is only evident at very low delivery volume. If the injectors were sent out for cleaning, chances are they were just flushed-out. If they test bad replacement is the only "fix".
Regards,
Randy D.

Yea, he did a pressure test. Then the injectors were sent out for "ultrasound" cleaning and retested. Any other ideas?

Yes, replace the injectors and then reevaluate the situation. I also have seen the air plate sitting to high when the engine is not running. This will cause the engine to get a gulp of air before the fuel hits and then you have a lean condition. To rectify the problem there is a little pin on the top left of the housing that holds the fuel dist. Drive the pin inwards unitl there is 2mm of deflection in the plate. If the tech goes to far, the whole thing has to come off! BE CAREFUL!!!!!!
