W210 SLS Line Question

2002 4matic wagon, the hydraulic lines between the accumulators and the ride height adjuster failed and needed replacement. Since the fittings on the accumulator ends were good I decided to reuse them. On cutting them off I found solid steel wire inside the lines. They could not be easily pulled out and went in past the first 90 degree bend in the line. If I hadn’t been so frugal I never would have known they were there.

What are these for? I imagine they restrict flow from the pump to the accumulators, but why? My replacement lines do not have the inserts. Driving the wagon loaded did not reveal anything. Will my wagon turn into some bucking bronco on a bumpy and try to throw us in a ditch?
