Frustrated old shade tree mechanic with MB S550

Hello, I just read a post about the 722 tranny about the conductor plate and would like to know more. First, I have a 2008 S550 4mattic with 135,000 miles. I bought the car March 2023 from Igor, who is a MB trained Mechanic who owns his own shop. He did extensive replacements on the car, intending it to be his own personal ride. He had the transmission rebuilt in 2022 during COVID, and supply chain delays greatly extending completion of rebuild. During this time, he replaced many components. Delays and family issue caused him to sell the car.

I bought the car in March 2023. I have the invoice from the trans shop in Chicago. (I live in about 3hrs from there). On the invoice, there is a note about a code: Transmission ;0722 signal from component Y3/8n3 - output sensor unavailable. Another note indicated the conductor plate was not replaced because of MB dealer parts constraights.

This same 0772 code was shown on a couple different courtesy scans when I had routine maikne done. Since there was zero indication oa any transmission problem I continued to drive the car for 16,000 miles with no problem. Then I began to feel a shudder on turns. MB calls the "juddering" and after fluid in front and rear differntial and transfer case was drained / filled.

Consensus is there is a problem with the transfer case and/or transmission. Doing lots of googling, I found a reference that that a conductor plate / output speed sensor can damage the transfer case.

I've now sunk close to $3,000 in attempts to fix it, including replacement of the rear differential which had no effect.

Now my plan is to haul it to Chicago and having the IGOR dig into it. He will be diggin deeper into the possibity the bearings in the transfer case or planetary system is worn. Worst case scenario is he has a transmission / tranferfer case lined up to swap if transfer case or trasnsmission are dead.

It still continues to drive and shift but has juddering on corner and a hesitation to engage going from reverse to drive (this is relativly new as the juddering has gotten worse. Other than this delay, it has never gone into limp mode or did not shift. Given worsening of symptoms it is parked until I haul it to Chicago.

Can someone confirm there is a connect between the speed senor / conductor plate and damage to transfer case or any other comments related to this lesson not to buy an older MB?

You didn't say, but that year should have the 722.9 transmission in it. The conductor plate is part of the valve body that also has the TCM integrated into it. I'm sure it didn't get replaced during the rebuild because it's something like $2000 just for the part. It comes as a virgin unit and has to be coded. I can't imagine why that had to be rebuilt at that mileage. Most of the .9s that we've seen with a shifting or shuttering issue was either a shift solenoid or most of the time just a software update. Whoever that will be working on that should have an SDS, Xentry or something similar to read all the realtime data to see what it's doing or not doing.
