190E 722.4 locked out of reverse during short drives

Hi all,

My 190E with 722.4 transmission has an odd issue where it won't let me shift from neutral to reverse, but only if I've driven it briefly (say less than 10-15 minutes). It always works otherwise, i.e. reversing out of the garage after a cold start, and reversing after a long drive.

I've dug into the documentation and can see there's a lockout feature that engages when moving faster than 10kph, and I'm guessing this is what's getting stuck even after I've stopped the car (unless the fluid is warm?)

Would anyone be able to confirm:
- If this "reverse gear shut off plunger" is the culprit? (Pic 1)
- Is it safe to take it out, as in my picture I would have to remove a pipe and some kind of soldered clamp? (Pic 2)
- Where I could find a replacement part or spring, as I have not seen this plunger mentioned by name anywhere else on the internet?

I did also come across this related thread and answer from @porkface https://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/236583-stuck-park.html. Not sure about the 5 or 6 screws mentioned though.

Thanks!

that pipe slips into the case, nothing to worry about. the hangups i've seen are related to dirt and not a weak spring. good luck, chuck.

Thanks for confirming that, have you seen the soldered(?) clip in front of that plunger before? I don't see it in any diagrams and not sure about desoldering it.
