1991 420SEL odd experience while driving

Hello all,
Driving to work this morning, I noticed the „economy-meter“ on my dash was showing that the engine was running a lot „less economical“ than usual… Normally when driving above 60, the needle is only just slightly away from the left side of the meter. While driving, the engine seemed to smooth out and the car sped up a little. The economy meter needle dropped back to it‘s normal, more economical range. While that is definitely a good thing that the engine was running better, I am left wondering why it was seemingly underperforming in the first place and what I should check!! Thank you all in advance for your time and insights!!

Did this car sit for a while? Could be a sticky/gummy fuel distributor. If it was mine I'd replace the fuel filter and add BG44K fuel cleaner and a few tanks of Shell premium gasoline.

Isn't the „economy-meter“ basically a vacuum meter?
