In a previous post, MB Doc said <<A new chain should last at least 125k miles, IF the engine was built after July 1986 or a chain "oiler" was retrofitted.>>

Is this a good idea for a 1985 190E?? I'm probably going to have my timing chain replaced as early as Friday (6/4) or Monday (6/7). Any guess-timate on oiler price??

Thanks again for your always speedy replies.

Mercedes thought that the oiler was necessary & made it standard on the later engines. The $1000 quote for the chain job would include this mod. at almost all shops.
I've seen later engines with 160000mi & the chain was still in good shape.

I had to install a chain in my Mom's '85 190E and I did install the oiler. It works great now with no noise or stretch after 30,000 miles!! I think it is a must.

Thanks for the information!

I will consult with my mechanic on this and ensure that this will be included in my repair.

Thanks again-

Thanks again for the information. I am no longer the owner of the 190E. My wife and I took the car back to the dealer, complained a bit, paid a few (read: MANY) more dollars for a more suitable, stable and mechanicaly sound 1988 300E. Dealer aknowledged the car was sold in "not-so-great" condition needing nearly $4,000.00 in repairs!!

Whew!
