Engine/gearbox transplant
Hi,
I've recently acquired an '88 560 SEC and have since found what appears to be a terminal problem with it. There is quite a large amount of oil fumes coming from the breather pipe on the cam cover into the air filter box when revved, and having read a post somewhere (can't remember wherre now), it would seem that a "....piston ring is worn out....." requiring "...an engine rebuild or replacement." Good news is I have a good engine/gearbox in my rather rusty '84 500 sec and was wondering if this would fit into the 560. If so, does anyone know how long this type of job takes as I will not be able to do it myself so will have to pay a mechanic to do it?!!? ![]() Or, would it be cheaper to have the piston rings replaced? The car has done 175,000 miles Any advise would be greatly appriciated. Thanks Adam Lane

I'm sorry I wont be of much help, but I can sympathise as I have come to the forum with a similar problem: recently bought a 560sec!
I think it takes about 22 hours to replace the rings. |

Before you start contemplating engine rebuilds and swaps get some diagnostics done beginning with a compression and/or leakdown test.
