engine stalling and tach reading?

I have a 1984 500SEL Euro. I love it. Very occassionally, however, it stalls when I am decelerating (usually a rapid deceleration, when I've applied the brake). I've noticed that the tach reading normally drops and holds around 500 rpm, but when it stalls the reading drops to 0 rpm. As I mentioned, it only rarely does this, but it's dangerous and I'd like to get it fixed. Once it went to 0 only for a split second and recovered, and it didn't stall. Is there a single device that prevents the engine from dropping below 500 rpm on rapid deceleration? Please give me some guidance if you can, anyone?
