The cruise control on my 1988 300TE has never worked. I would be greatful to receive pointers on how to begin diagnosing the problems (in modular fashion). I would also be interested to know what some of the common problems are. I have the MBNA electrical troubleshooing manual and can refer thereto.
thanks

for what its worth, the cruise control on my 6.9 didn't work since I bought the car used in 1998. the car would speed up or slow down using the control lever, but would never hold a "cruise" speed. the culprit turned out to be the cruise control amplifier located beneath the dash on the drivers side. i replaced it and the problem disappeared.

Maybe my symptoms and solutions will be of some use.

Most of the time we see the control unit or amp as it is refered to. We do sell them in the partshop!! We offer them in a cost effective rebuilt unit.

Little lightbulbs for these cars are cheap. Relevant to the cruise control? My experience and what I've read lends credence.

The cruise control amp has an "electrical relationship" with the tailights. It has been discussed that some non-German bulbs have electrical differences that can cause premature failure of the cruise control amp.

My advice: Either buy bulbs from M-B or buy Osram from someone else. The bulbs in question run between $1 and $2.50 each. Last I checked on a cruise control amp, it was well over $100. In this instance, relevant or not, I simply don't see the logic in going with some generic $1.50 bulb, but some do...
