Hmmmmmmm?
Maybe a cracked seam in the tank? Does it happen only when the tank is topped off?

When the gas pump stops - don't add anymore gas. In my '95 E420, if too much gas is put in it wreaks of gas smell. Dealer told me there was an overflow valve, and that's where the gas smell was coming from.
I used to get in about another 1/2 galloon or so after the pump first shut off. Stopped topping it off and the smell went away. Right or wrong, it worked. Try not topping off gas next time and see what happens. |

Not too full
I agree with the previous post. I had the same issue. On my 300E there is a little whole near the gas cap for overflow as well. I think I was filling her to the brim with the gas a tad cooler being below ground. When things heated in conjunction with me making turns, it would slosh around a I smelled the same...
Also make sure the cap is nice and snug. |
