"Cold" related issues

I have a couple of questions regarding my '02 C320:

1. I notice that in the colder weather (< 50 F) the engine will make considerably more "noise" when it is cold. A louder "growl" is how I would describe it. Sounds like an intake related issue. Almost like air is routed differently based on ambient temp. Comments?

2. My climate control seems to work fine when the interior is cold. The air from all of the vents and defrost is warm. The problem is when the car interior warms up, the defrost vents start throwing cold air all of the time. I still get warm air from the floor and dash vents, but the defrost is very cold which hits you in the face. I can redirect air manually with the EC, but in auto it exhibits the above behavior. Is this normal?

Thanks folks,
Brian
