1990 190E 2.6 oil pressure problem... uh-oh!

My wife has been piling the miles on our 1990 190E 2.6 as of late, and I've had little "wheel time."

Today, we traded cars. Cruising along this morning, I notice the oil pressure gauge is reading only about 2.8bar, instead of pinning the 3 mark as it usually does.

I stopped for gas, and checked the oil level. It was down about a litre, so I topped it off.

I decided to get the car nice and warm, and see what happens. Well, except for the 2.8bar problem, it seemed fine. Dropped to about 0.6 or so at hot idle, as it always did. As soon as you load the engine, the needle jumps, but just does not get all the way to 3 bar.

The oil/filter has been in there for about 6000km's, so it's due for a change. I wonder if dirty oil/filter can cause this? I'll change it and see if it solves the problem.

Am I heading for disaster...?

Disaster have happened in the past and will happen again but before expecting it, I'd suggest you replace oil/filter asap and see what happens.

John:

I wonder if the sender unit is starting to go bad? Here's a simple test that might help you determine if this is happening:

Update...

Just finished the oil change on the 'ol gal, and on the shakedown drive, the oil pressure whipped right up to 3, as per usual. Jeez, the oil didn't look that dirty.

339K and still holding together...

Hi John. I notice that in my 190E 2.6 the oil pressure gauge reads slightly lower when it is about time for an oil change.

Blame MB for putting in such an accurate gauge in the car. :-)
