Unhappy 94 E320 no crank, no start again!

Well I thought I had the problem solved (see earlier thread of the same title), but it's back.

To review: The car, 94 E320 155,000KM, was working fine, my wife gets to a local shopping center and when she returns to the car it will not turn over. Towed it home, eliminated the starter, battery and solenoid as a possible source, by triggering the starter manually and the car starts (with the ignition on).

After some deliberation it appeared that the neutral safety switch was a likely cause so I replaced it. I also pulled the ignition switch out as a possible culprit but held off replacing it pending the results of the new neutral safety switch. Put the new neutral safety switch in and with the ignition switch dangling below the steering column twist the key and car starts right up. Put the ignition switch back in the steering column test again, starts right up. Left it overnight, and this morning it starts right up for my wife, she heads into town and after her appointment comes back to the car – nothing, will not turn over. I arrive sometime later with the same results. I boost the car just in case, still nothing. So I jack up the front end remove the left front tire and belly pan, crawl under and short the starter and it fires right up so I drove it home.

It appears it could still be the ignition switch, or, I am wondering if it may be a wiring issue. From reading a number of threads here, the engine harnesses are a known problem; does anyone know if the starter wiring is part of the engine harness? I did hoist the car back up tonight and wiggle the wires going to the N.S.S. while my wife held the key in the start position, but no luck.

Any other comments on the next course of action?

Thanks,

John
