Using US Wipers on 124 Euro Headlights
I finished getting the US Headlight Wiper motor on the right side of my 300E. I will do the left side this morning.
I thought there might be some of you with Euro conversions or considering conversions who would like to know what was involved. I took a piece of 1" strap metal and put a "Z" bend in it. The "Z" bend served to offset the motors 13/16" rearward. The spacing between the mount on the Euro lamp and the mount in the bracket is 1 3/4". I did not notice the hole size, I just found the bit in the index that fit the hole in the Euro lamp. When you drill the hole in the bracket for mounting the motor, it needs to be the right distance from the bottom edge so that the ledge on the motor mount fits properly. This keeps the motor from turning in its mount. With the motor properly mounted, you will have to deepen the notch in the underlamp panel that provides relief for the shaft. It needs to be deepened about 3/16" to 1/4". I simply pushed off the plastic trim piece that covers the edge of the notch, and lowered the notch with a die grinder working from the back side so that I did not slip and scratch the exposed surface of the panel. I then put the plastic trim piece back in place in the lowered notch. The last thing is the connection. The cord on the US wiper motor was not long enough to fit in the mount slot on the Euro light, but it is long enough to connect to the US harness. I just let it rest on the sheet metal opening below the light assembly. That's it. If my digital camera would focus on close ups, I would post some pictures, but if you want to do this, using my dimensions you can do this without the trial and error that I put into it. If you are considering putting Euros on your 124 with headlight wipers, don't hesitate, it's a straight forward doable operation to reuse your wipers. Good luck and Happy New Year, |

Great tip! Wish you could add this to the D.I.Y. section!
I want to convert to euros as well, but I was reluctant to do so if it meant losing the headlight wipers...now I know they can be saved! I think the wipers add to the "cool" factor as well... ![]()

124 wipers
Larry - thank you for all the informative posts. I found this and other sites and have been able to answer many questions without even registeting or posting.
I installed Depo lights yesterday and just removed the wiper motors for now. I read your instructions and follow the strap specs. I have a few questions though...
Thanks again! I love new look and they work great! I kept the stock turn signals and they seem to be fine. I am guessing the euro units are just a preference? Thanks again for all the good info! John |
