79 SL Horsepower Figures

I was cruising eBay looking at older SL models for sale. Somebody is selling a 79 280SL, saying that the 280SL has 185hp and gets 20mpg, compared with the 450SL that has 160hp and gets only 12-14mpg.... and the 380SL has even less power. So...... if this is true, why did MB even make a 450 or 380 for the 79 SL?... or is this guy blowing smoke?
