Question Alarm system question...

I have a 96 E320, and i was wondering if the alarm system on the new MB's can be put on my car and how muchwill it cost? Are there any places i could get the MB alarm system besides the dealership? I don't want to buy it there since the price is going to be sky high!

Thanks,

If you're talking about the alarm system (ATA) with the dedicated siren, as opposed to using the vehicle horn, I think you're out of luck. You're cars' wiring is COMPLETELY different from the newer models, so adding a few components is out of the question. You could up-grade your car with an after-market system though. Exactly what features do you want on your ATA? Is there something about the newer cars ATA that you prefer? The function of the ATA hasn't changed that much over the years as far as break-in protection is concerned. As far as anti-theft protection goes, MB changes these functions frequently to stay one step ahead of car thieves. Some cars shut off fuel injection, some won't crank, etc. What do you want out of your ATA?

My alarm system is the old style system with the red and green lights on the interior rear view mirror. The remote doesnt work unless you stand 5 feet away from the car and its annoying.
If i were to get an aftermarket alarm, i just want one that has a simple chirp... mroe like a *beep* like the ones on BMW's and Lexus/Toyota.

Your car has an infra-red ( IR ) system. The newer MB's have radio frequency systems. The difference is that IR's need to have the transmitter/key aimed at the vehicle (similar to a VCR or TV). The newer MB's use RF (radio frequency). This works at a longer range, and doesn't require the transmitter to be aimed at the vehicle. If you decide to go with an after-market system, make sure the installer knows what he's doing.
