Roaring pulley on 190E

Hey guys, my 1991 190E 2.6 has 146,000 miles -- runs and looks great.

I have started to hear a "roar" in the pulley area -- my guess is that a bearing is going out. In the immediate vicinity on the belts are the alternator, water pump, camshaft, and idler pulley (tensioner).

I think I can rule out the camshaft and alternator. I'll check more closely tomorrow, but what do you think -- pulley or water pump? (One thing -- it doesn't seem to do it "all" of the time, it seems to get better then worse again. -- I hope that isn't an indication of the water pump -- thermostat starting/stopping the water flow).

check the bracket that holds the fan clutch. The bearing in that bracket came off in my 93 2.6 190e and broke the belt. here is a picture from fastlane.

Interestingly, my fan (viscous?) fan clutch was replaced about 7k ago (not cooling engine).

I am not sure how to insert a picture in my reply. I tried to insert an image but did not work. Anyways, go to:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/pmc/wizard.jsp?partner=pmc&year=1993&make=MB&model=190-E-005&category=G&part=Fan+Clutch+Bearing+Brkt

I always buy from www.performancemotorcars.com

They are by far the cheapest.

Good Luck

PS. You may want to try a "Mechanic Stethescope" to pin point the noise. it may prove helpful.
