I just bought this '75 280s. The speedometer does not work. Appears that both the upper and lower cables are okay. I disconnected cable from tranny and manually turned it and it was okay. Is there a gear in the tranny that needs replaced? Is this a major ordeal?

Try hooking electric drill to cable & see if speedo will work. There is a plastic gear that drives cable in the tranny, not difficult to replace.
