My '87 260E has a growling sound that seems to be coming from the transmission. From the drivers seat the sound is in front of me in the center. From the side of the car it also seems to be coming from the transmission and not the engine judging by location. The sound increases directly with the engine rpm. Makes no difference if the car is in gear or not.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? Steve ------------------ Steve Hawkins 1987 260E, 79K miles |

Steve,
I'm going to assume that you have an automatic. Your description sounds like what just happened to my 300SD. I had some torque converter bolts back out. If that's your problem, get it checked now because it can be costly. Best of luck Peter Kalloday ------------------ Wing_Nut 82"300SD |

Most of the time on these, the front pump is making the noise. It will get worse and eventually break. To replace the tranny will be about $2k I think. Go to the dealer, they have the best deal and warranty going.
