TDC Transmitter Theory

In trying to remove all the variables in poor idle diagnosis, I have a question about the TDC transmitter. 560sl, by the way.

When I changed out the water pump, is it possible I could have knocked the TDC transmitter out of kilter, causing lousy idle? Without pulling the power steering to get a good look, it seems ok but very dirty so I am not sure what I am looking at.

Is this a mechanical device or electric or what? Also, my repair CD says the sensor post sticks up from the balancer at 20 degrees ATDC but mine has a post sticking up at 25 degrees.

School me please as to whether this could cause problems or would I waste my time taking the P/ s loose to check it out.

thanks.

J. Boggs
