Yes you could be low on power steering fluid, with the car ideling turn the wheel sharply to both sides. When the wheel is at its full extent do you hear a roaring or whining noise? if so ad ps fluid. Something else to try if that doesn't work. With the car parked push up and down on the front fender and hood line area. If you hear a squeaking, most likely you have a bad lower ball-joint. good luck!

If you hear a rubbing noise inside the car, it is more than likely your contact ring for your airbag. I had the same problem on my 89 300SEL. I had to get a new ring, lubricating mine did not last long.
