is the C240 (w203) included in the recall??? my pulley has part# 112-035-08-00, didnt see any cracks, but my serpentine belt got eaten a week ago, and my new belt is beginning to be stripped of its rubber on the side, exposing the threads.

must be a very slight wobble on any of the engine's pulley, any ideas?

Bruno-- Your c240 would not be included if their is a recall, that balancer number you have is one of the later ones, not prone to cracking or coming apart. Most or all of the the the 112 v6 engines with balancer ending 00-00 from 1998 -2000 would be involved.

Oh Yeah, Harmonic Balancer eating crank case galore...

Make: MERCEDES BENZ
Model: E320
Year: 1999
NHTSA Action Number: PE03058
Summary:
ODI HAS RECEIVED 35 REPORTS OF ENGINE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY HARMONIC BALANCER FAILURE ON THE SUBJECT VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH M112 OR M113 ENGINES. THE M112 SERIES IS MERCEDES-BENZ'S FIRST EVER PRODUCTION V6 ENGINE AND ITS MODULAR DESIGN ALLOWS IT TO SHARE MANY COMPONENTS, INCLUDING THE ENGINE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY HARMONIC BALANCER, WITH THE M113 SERIES V8 ENGINES. THE M112 AND M113 ENGINE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY PROVIDES ACCESSORY POWER VIA A SERPENTINE BELT. THE COMPLAINANTS ALLEGE THAT ENGINE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY FAILURE CAUSES LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST WHICH MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH. A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION HAS BEEN OPENED TO ASSESS THE SCOPE AND SAFETY CONSEQUENCES OF THE ALLEGED DEFECT.

Its too bad that only 35 people complained!!!

More people than that have complained. That was before they started the investigation.

hey

I have a 1998 C43 AMG. ANd it has the m113 engine. I bought it from a diffrent state and it has 75k on the clock. Now my engine is making a weird clicking sound and it sounds like a loose belt or something? What does a bad crank shaft balancer sound like at idle? when i am in neutral and i push on the gas some the clicks speed up.. does this sound like the same problem? Also if i go to my local MB dealership will they fix it for free since it is a common hazard? is there any recall or something? what should i tell them? TIA

Hello.

The balancer is what used to be called the crankshaft pulley. My wife has the V6, which is the sum of my experience.

If you visually follow the serpentine belt through it's path you should be able to see the lowest pulley; that's on the crankshaft. There's a rubber cushion separating the inner driven part and the outside pulley. If it's bulging out anywhere it's suspect.

If that area is crowded, the cooling fans on my wife's 99 remove easily; hopefully yours is the same. If you remove them that should give you more room to see.

When the vehicle is running (do not put your hands down there if the vehicle is running) you should be able to see the balancer. Use a flashlight if necessary. If there is a visible wobble the balancer is bad.

There's an investigation but to this point Benz is denying there's a problem. Having it fixed now before it breaks is much cheaper.

I have much higher regard for Phil Smart than Barrier.

Loud and smart are not the same thing...tone down your caps.

The NHTSA total of thirty-plus complaints was as of a 12/17/2003. They didn't add additional complaints to the total.

Pulley

I asked my dealer to check it, the service writer told me they dont, since they dont get paid for it. I almost went thru the roof, after calling MB customer relations and getting some arrogant call center idiot, I asked if there was a problem or not. The resuling answer did not agree or deny, so asked him to deny there is/was a problem and the answer was that I was "putting words in his mouth"
I went to my dealer and asked the service manager this time, they looked at it and concuded they should change it, and did, on the spot while I waited.
MB better get their head on straight, they seem to be following what the US manufacturers did in the sixties. Lexus, and some US mfrs. have learned, and seem to be be cheaper and more reliable mode of transportation. I thought my ML was just unusual in its problems, but it was a leading indicator. (see consumer reports)
