AC Rec/Dryer question

I have a leaking AC hose that needs to be replaced. My shop says that I should also replace the Rec/Dryer. I have read in this forum that when the vacuum is applied for a while to the system, that the moisture is drawn out of the R./Dryer; thus I wouldn't need to buy a new one. So, the question is : Should I spend $60 on a new Rec/Dryer? (Note: I'm staying with R-12 in my '87 300SDL)

Replace the dryer. Pulling a vacuum does not remove the moisture from the dryer.

Yes, it must be replaced, but $60 sure sounds like a high price. They are usually in the $30 range.

Good luck,

By the way . . .

Larry (or Jim), have you heard of Fligor ($30+) or ACM ($60+) dryers; or 4-Seasons suction hoses? Any favorites? Thanks, Paul

There were several questions above - which one?

If you're wondering about the R/D, yes it should ALWAYS be replaced any time the system is opened up.

Sorry about that, I have been running through the forums all day.

Is the $30 Fligor ok? I hope so, I just ordered one.

I have no idea about that brand - never heard of it. But I will tell you that through the years I have used various off-brand R/Ds and have seen no difference.

Good luck,
$30 cost to us, $60 would be cost from tech shop - that's the difference. No tech is going to supply parts at his cost.

I used a BEHR. Thought it would be a German part but turns out it came from China.
