1984 300sd steers hard to the right almost
all the time. I changed out the power steering fluid today, and it turned easy once. then went back to normal. found one lower ball joint bad and replaced it, did not change at all. ------------------ David A Black |

The problem is a broken or stuck valve inside the P/S sector. It should be replaced.

It sounds like a broken proportioning valve spring. This causes assist in only one direction. Jack up the front of the car (both wheels off the ground)and start it up. If its the proportioning valve the steering wheel will turn all by itself. There was a company a few years ago selling the springs but you'd be better off replacing the steering box with a rebuilt unit.
