Engine died on Trip to Miami

The engine on my 1987 300E died 3 times on a round trip from Maryland to Miami. When I arrived in Miami I got a rough idle, then while driving down a street the engine suddenly died. But it started up again after I coasted to a stop. This happened twice again after cruising along the interstate. My guess is that the car has never had a new fuel filter since it was new. Could the filter or accumulator be the problem?

Thanks.

PS It seems to act up in hot climates... sometimes it does not want to restart once the engine gets warmed up. I will have to wait maybe 15 minutes before the engine will start again.

For what it's worth, you may want to check for spark, as soon as the engine quits.
" Hot " problems can often be traced back to electrics/electronics.
