250SL Ignition Switch

Posted for a friend without internet access: Has a '67 230SL (Euro). How do I remove the ignition switch? Can't seem to get at it from the rear since there is a solid metal tray on the bottom of the instrument panel, with no screws evident. Looks like it was put in from the top.
