pulse codes and duty cycles

I am a newbie when it comes to electrical diagnostics on my '91 300D 2.5T. I've read the DIY article on this website, but I don't have a code reader, just a digital multimeter with duty cycle capability. I've searched the posts also, but cannot find the answers to some very basic questions...

My questions are two:

First, how does duty cycle diagnostics relate to impule code diagnostics?

Secondly, can I use an autoranging digital multimeter with duty cycle capability to measure impulse codes?

Thanks for helping the newbie.
