'96-'99 E300 intake clogging problems?
Just curious, because I know they have EGR systems, and I know they have CCV recirculating systems. This combo makes for nasty intake clogging on VW TDI's. Wondering if anyone's had their intakes off and if they are dirty/clogged?? I saw one post of someone who disconnected the vaccum hose to the EGR on his '95 E300, and plugged the hose(off road use of course). Has anyone else taken preventative measures to keep the intake clean? Thanks,
Dave

96-99 E300 intake clogging problems
I just did 96 E300D Glow plug replacement. I had to take the intake off. Looking into the intake, there was a fair amount if intake soot. I removed what I could manually (fingers and rags). I didn't get into solvents, etc. to do the cleaning. Overall, the passages were clear, but soot/gunk WAS evident.

Thanks Gwalter. What percentage would you say was clogged? A thin layer, a thick one? Check this pic of a TDI intake after just 40k. I'd say this one is 95% clogged!!!

I would say that two or three passages were no more than 5% (five percent )gunked up with a shiny substance ....maybe about about 1/8 of an inch thick in the beginning part of the chamber. I merely scraped it out carefully. I wasn't concerned since the chamber was clearly free. The others were simply coated with dry black soot and I would say they were clear of any restriction.

Well thats good to hear Gwalter. I was hoping it didn't look like the pic above. That is extremely common in TDI's that aren't modified.....
