Clunking/Creaky front End
Hi,
I have a 1990 300SL R129. I have a problem with a clunking front left wheel/suspension. It makes the noise particularly when turning right over a bump in the road. I took the car to a mechanic who diagnosed a worn balljoint. I had this replaced today but it continues to make the noise. By the way he replaced the balljoint without removing the control arm from the car. What could be the problem? By the way I replaced the front anti-roll bar bushes myself a few months ago with no joy. Any ideas Thanks |

Just for completion, it was the front shock absorber mount that caused the problem.
The part was quite expensive as compared to other Mercedes models. (£45- about $70). Thanks |

The W129 has a vibration damper on the strut mount, partially made of sheet lead.
I suspected the strut mount was the problem. Peter
