Maybe this is the source of the problem:

Shell did this in Canada and ruined TONS of fuel sending units with some crap they laced their gas with.
I will push my car for a mile past a Shell station to fill up somewhere else. |

So it seems that my guess (and BenzBob's) was correct. Check my title!

My '99 SL and my wifes '99 ML have developed these problems recently. We buy 99% of our fuel in two local stations, different brands. Any suggestions as to how we figure out which one is the culprit?

Get a sample of each gasoline and put a shiny penny in each sample. Check it from time to time. The one that darkens the penny is the culprit.

Two glasses of the competitors gas. Three pennies in each. Any idea how long before I see something?

I don't know how long. You're breaking new ground here. But this is a comparative test. You're looking for one sample to show a significantly faster reaction than the other.

Bee Pee Gasoline
Amoco, an abbreviation of American Oil Company, was originally called Standard Oil of Indiana.
BP, formerly known as British Petroleum, seems to have bought out some or all of Amoco. Rather than tell the public that AMERICAN petroleum has become BRITISH Petroleum, apparently they have decided to redifine BP as "Beyond Petroleum", whatever the hell that means with regard to their fuels and lubricants, all of which are made from crude petroleum in the usual way. Here in Miami, BP (Beyond Petroleum) sells Amoco gasoline. In the past, some boycotters have taken it out on Shell because of all the major oil companies, that is the only one that is foreign-owned (even though you can buy shares on the NYSE). My opinion is that they are all thieves, some lying thieves, others just exaggerating thieves.

3 hours, no difference yet. At the gas stations I noticed that the station I use all the time (and I buy most of the gas) seemed to pump faster. I almost splashed myself.

You think you have it bad. At todays exchange rate, we are paying US$4.54 per US gallon (that's 99.9 Euro cents per litre at 3.78 litres per US gallon at US$/Euro 1.2000). And Ireland is about the cheapest in Europe at the moment.

Just over two weeks now. Both glasses of fuel have darkened in colour to the same degree, but the pennies in both are still bright as new. In the meantime I am filling both cars at a third brand station. Both gauges still misreading. And the price of fuel has dropped a little...US$4.44.
