I see this type of question alot. You'll notice only the last number is different.
The first number means "up to" #12-013742, so that's #12-000001 through #12-013742, the second number means "as of" #12-013743, so #12-013743 and higher numbers. If you're lucky, if can find your warranty booklet for the car, on the last page is this glued on blue "Warrtungsheft" or warranty sheet, which will have your engine number on it, if you look it over carefully, it will begin 103.940, and a few more numbers, then you'll see the 12-XXXXXX, those last 6 you need to know. Gilly,
Thanks. I don't know if I have the warranty book; is there anywhere else like, say, the engine itself, where this number would appear? After all, how would a tech or mechanic know what to get if I went in for injector seals?

YES, it is the last 6 numbers of the engine number. It's just easier to get it if you have the correct warranty book, instead of going after the stamped number on the block.
I would usually rumage through the glovebox to get the number (to find the owners manual stuff) rather than try for the engine number off the block itself. Gilly ps, it COULD also be the last page in the maintenance manual, so check there also. |

Thanks -- I'll definitely look at the manual and other paperwork I have for the car.

Send me the chassis number and I'll see if it has a data card.

Looks like Steve will probably be able to get it for you when you send him your vin. If not, go to any Mercedes dealership service department and ask them to kindly print a Vehicle Master Inquiry Sheet (VMI) for your car.

Steve, Gilly, Willy, thanks.
I have the original window sticker and the engine number -- 056136 -- is on it. I suppose then I would need the seals for Engine 12-013743, correct?

Too late -- I already placed the order.
From what I read here, replacing seals is an easy, DIY job, and one that I am hoping will solve my intermittent stumbling at idle.
