The vacuum hose attaches to a brass ferrule at the back of the economy guage. It reads manifold vacuum and lets you know if you have a heavy right foot. If you look at the bottom of the back of the instrument panel, just inboard of the round multi-pin connector, you should see it.

Speedometer Repair

One of the best features of this site is the huge amount of "been there, done thats" .... by using the SEARCH feature and a key words, it is amazing what you will find.

Regarding speedo repairs, I used speedo and repair and found lots and lots of postings. Have a look: Speedo Repair

Thanks, man. Great photography.

Will come in handy soon for me. Have not read manual, but I never would have guessed it's just a friction fit. Would have been searching everywhere for screws...

Really well done! Firstly I can't take photos as well as you can, and secondly, I can't insert text and line-art as well either!!!!!

Nice post!

You can upgrade your dash lights with Xenon bulbs. I did that using this $42 kit from **************.com, which is probably a bit expensive but I like to support those who support MB enthusiasts. They also sell a pair of the bulbs separately for $13.

(Their site uses frames... navigate through their home page if you're interested.)

I haven't had any problems with melting or anything, and the color is much more pleasing as well. No more dingy yellow.

As someone mentioned, I need instructions on fixing my TRIP ODOMETER ONLY. My regular odo works fine, but the trip odo clicks at 99.9 as I've seen mentioned.

While I am replacing the bulbs (one is out) I want to fix the trip odo, too.

What a super original post!

I have the same problem - since last week, the speedo & odometer work fine but the trip odometer can't be brought to zero from the button, and clicks all the time

Chris W., Thanks for the superb pictures and the whole article, especially where to insert the tool and pull the cluster. I would like to add two comments:

1) I have the factory tool 140 589 02 33 00 and its length with the handles is 7-1/4".

2) My 1994 E420 does not have a speedometer cable running to the cluster, it is electronic and has an electrical connector in the back. I spent probably an hour looking for the cable and the clip as both your article and the CD Service Manual says it must be unclipped.

Excellent description. Worked great on my 91 300D 2.5 Turbo. Should add something about changing your idiot light bulbs along the bottom as well.

At the dealer they gave me 5W bulbs as standard replacements. They are really bright--have to turn it down to about half to match the oncoming headlights.....

Thanks again...

I hope your dealer realizes that 5W bulbs are incorrect equipment for these cars, and will melt the illumination prisms.
