After two years of sitting in storage, I need to flush out the fuel tank on my BMW 745i. I removed the pre-pump and saw how old and brown the gas in there is and noticed alot of rust and scale in there. Didn't notice any leaks though (whew!). Anyhow, I'm wondering what the best method of flushing/re-coating the tank would be and if re-coating it is even necessary since it's not leaking. I had a friend who had a tank flushed and bronze lined by a local radiator shop last summer and so far, so good. Another friend told me to use a product made by Bill Hirsch and do it myself. If the tank isn't leaking, is there any sense in re-coating it or would a thorough flushing do? Obiously, I'm going to change all the fuel filters as soon as I have the "new" tank back in. Any help would be greatly appreciated as always! ------------------ Rgds, Aaron Greenberg MB technician Precision Motorcars, Cincinnati, Ohio '67 250SE Cabriolet '77 450SL '80 300SD '85 380SE '89 420SEL '93 300E 2.8 '74 Jensen Interceptor Mk.III '81 DeLorean DMC12 '85 BMW 745i Turbo |

We have been sending tanks to Moyer's Fuel Tank Renu 1-800-328-9550. They clean the tank, snad blast the rust out, meld in new metal where needed, coat the inside with a hard imperviuos plastic and coat the outside with a pliable black rubberized material. I am very satisfied. I think there process is a franchised type arrangement as I have heard of others with similar names through-out the rust belt.
I don't recommend using the epoxy/plastic fluids like Bill Hirsh sells because most people don't have the facilities to prepare the surface for the coating. I also warn against using known rusty tanks with fuel injected vehicles. While not as important on electronic injection as on K-Jet. I image 745 injectors are specially priced (bg). ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |

Aaron,
I just reinstalled a gas tank (1986 280GE) that I had a Renu franchise repair. I had no rust or scale, just a leak at the seam. Their process is a coating (exterior and interior) and bake on. For my application they had to cut a hole in the top of the tank to remove the small plastic tank at the inlet that helps to prevent air suction when fuel is at a low state (the name of it escapes me). They installed a metal one, welded the cut out piece back on, coated, baked and UPSed it back. Lifetime Warranty to original owner. After looking at it, I can't see how it could fail again. POR-15 makes a reputable product that a number of folks I know have used and are satisfied with. Can't say that I've ever tried it. They have the chemicals to clean it and the actual coating would be your option. Good Luck and let us know what you do and how it turns out. ------------------ S, J.R.
