Leaking Gas Tank
Hello all,
After the hottest day of the season my trunk began to smell like gas. Its definitely in the trunk, not the engine bay. Theres a brand new mercedes regulation gas cap on it and I havent moved or messed with any of the hoses. The dealership says I need a new gas tank. Is it more probable that the O ring on the fuel-screen has deteriorated or that one of those hoses running from the gas tank to the fuel pump assembly has cracked? Any other common/possible cause? Thanks for the suggestions guys!

New gas tank!?? I smell a rat with those fumes!
Unless you have a puncture of some sort that the service advisor instantly pointed out, the gas tank would be the LAST thing I would suspect to be at fault! More likely, you have an aging fuel hose that has developed a leak. It doesn't take much of a leak to get a horrendous odor! I had a bad hose on my W124 that had gas fumes wafting through the garage...even after sitting overnight! The leak was so small that the gas would evaporate before leaving a noticeable pool...only after seeing the telltale stain on the side of the hose (and the fuel pump cover) could I conclude that the hose was at fault...had to drive the car a considerable distance and then check in order to see the leak. The replacement hose cured the problem.

Yeah, they wanted $707.60 for the tank too and there were none available here or in Germany, back order list or something crazy like that. When you replaced the fuel line was it standard hose or was it something special fitted? I have been looking at the schematics on my MB CD and havent found anything saying either way. Also, *********************** (a great place to get parts for a very nice cost BTW) didnt have any specific hoses listed, just rolls of standard sizes.
I suppose i'll just go ahead and jack her up and take a look. Thanks for the suggestion!

I bought the hose from the dealer...$60.
Probably over-priced, but it wasn't readily available at the time. The fittings looked to be the standard A/N banjo-style on one end and hex on the other...the hose was fairly stiff, so it was designed for a particular application. Those special hex wrenches used for this stuff works best, but since I don't own any, socket wrenches work OK (albeit, with some marring of the bolt surfaces). Make sure you depressurize the system before doing this (remove the gas cap). There will be some spillage, so have a couple of clamps ready to pinch the hose ends when doing this...
