BTW, if you get 26 Kbaud with your modem and crappy phone line and your modem is an internal one, try to get an EXTERNAL USRobotics 56K (x2/V90/V92). It will boost your bit rate to about 40 Kbaud. Been there done that (your favorite phrase :-) several times with great success.

EXTERNAL modems (especially serial ones from USR/3COM) are a whole better than internal ones. Do never buy USB-based external modems because they're junk.
