Gear Ratios
I have a 1990 300 SEL. I have been unable to find out what the ratio of the rear end gear is as well as the transmission gears. I would appreciate any help locating a source of this info for 126 class cars.

Rear End Gear Ratios?
 Likewise, I'm wondering what gears are standard in and available for the '96 and later W-210 chassis. Got a '99 E-300 Turbodiesel, and it may have the same gears as the E-320 gasser, but don't the E-420/430s have "taller" gear ratios? Anyone ever try those higher V8 (lower numerically) ratio gears in the diesel for less revs per mile?

S-class with the 3.0L six should have a 3.46:1 axle. You can also cross check this with the following forumula.
Axle ratio = revs at 60/tire revs per mile It should be within a few percent. You can look up the tire's revs per mile by checking the "specs" for any 205/65R-15 (the OE tire size) tire on The Tire Rack site. The speed/rev relationship holds regardless of installed tire revs/mile. If the installed tire revs/mi are different than OE it will just add error to the speedo. Duke

Rear end ratio for W-210 '99 E-300?
Believing that the overdrive fifth gear ratio for the automatic is 0.83 and that the revs per mile for the E-300 diesel are approximately 2100 rpm, working backwards, one could figure that the rear end ratio is 3.07? Crawling under and wiping the accumulated grim off a certain spot on the third member confirms that! Using 814 revs per mile for the 215/55X16 Michelin MXV4s, 814 X 3.07 X 0.83 = 2074 revs per mile. Wonder how the diesel would like the 2.82s or whatever is in the E-420/430 V8s?
