Question Castrol Dextron Tranny Fluid For 500E?

Stopped by the dealership this morning to pick up some transmission fluid for my 92 500E and they handed me a bottle of Castrol Dexron. I just wanted to make sure this is the correct fluid to use before I mix it with my existing fluid changed about a year ago. I'm just topping off with this fluid.

On a seperate note, I'm considering changing to Schaeffers Transmission Fluid and was wondering how many have tried it and had better results with it. It's not a synthetic so it should be safe, but is it better than the Castrol or am I wasting my money?

Any other tranny oils worth considering?

Thanks for your input everyone.

The dealer was right to give you Castrol. It is one of the 12 approved brands of ATF, besides MB's own, whom ever makes it. This is per MB "Factory Approved Service Products", which you can get for free by calling MB.
FYI, the following are the approved ATFs:
Castrol Dextron-III
Castrol Transmax M
Chevron Dextron III
Citgo Multi-purpose ATF D
Exxon Superflo ATF Dextron III
Havoline ATF Dextron III
Texaco ATF Dextron III
Pennzoil ATF D
Quaker State Dextron III
Sunoco ATF Dextron III
Unocal Multi-Purpose ATF D
Valvoline ATF Type D

Thanks Rick!

I wonder if the Schaeffers is also approved. Of the ones you've mentioned are any better than the other?

I don't know if any of the approved ATFs are better than the others. It is odd though that Mobil and Mobil 1 are not listed. There may be an updated list. The list (booklet) I got from MB last year was dated 2001. I don't know how often the issue a new list.
I have never heard of Schaeffers. Then again I had never heard of Chevron Delo 400 motor oil until I bought a diesel.

You'd think the list of Factory Approved Service Products would be available on-line by now! It would save MBUSA a lot on printing and postage, and be more convenient for us DIYers. It wouldn't be too hard to type up and tie it to the D.I.Y. link on top of this page. Would the fact that it's copyrighted by MBUSA be an issue?
