W123 gearbox oil

Hi all

I would like to replace the gearbox oil in my 1980 200 (manual tranny). The manual says to use Automatic Transmission fluid for Manual Transmission. is this right? should there be any W-ratings? what brand to choose etc, will it make a difference?

Thanks beforehand

Patrick

Any current Dexron ATF will be satisfactory. My personal choice is Redline MTL - a specifically blended synthetic base oil for manual transmissions where the OEM recommendation was ATF. MTL is a 70W-80 GL-4 gear oil, and it yields smoother, lower efforts shifts, especially when cold.
