Battery keeps dying

Are the dome lights working with the door switches?
When I bought my used c280 it had a dead battery .It turns out the door switch was broken and the light was switched off at the fixture ... but the delay relays were still energized waiting for a signal the door had closed! ...drawing the battery down.

checking out all the options

I do have a trunk cd player...hasn't worked since I got the car, but I do notice it spinning up when I re-connect the battery. Maybe I'll unhook it and see. Everything else on the car seems fine...lights work as they should (interior and exterior), car has been tested as is charging just fine, and it runs perfect. Even when the battery was toast I could jump it and it would run like a champ. I've just had some issues getting an amperage reading off the car. The voltage checks out just fine, but no amps are registering on my multimeter no matter what I do...making it really hard to pinpoint the problem.

Make sure your multimeter is set to the proper range

If it's not digital and automatic - the range (.01, .1, 1, 10) amps may need to be manually adjusted. If you have it set to read 10s of amps and you're only measuring for less than 1/4 amp - it may show as zero.

Good Luck,

trunk mountrd CD Changer

For above thread posts from dgtlmn and others,
My CD trunk changer never worked since I owned car either (I am second owner of this euro model car I imported-600SEL). Following above inputs, I easily took out two 10mm bolts on trunk floor, holding CD assembly, looked at bottom of CD changer, noticed a fuse holder assembly in the changer body. Inserted a 10amp fuse (later read a downloaded Becker guide that it should be 7.5amp), and the CD changer now works perfectly-all functions completely ok.
Am somewhat weary the fuse had been removed for a reason (draining the battery), but I will monitor and re-inform all.
Thanks to all for this thread of info. Changed my life.

cd changer

Mine turns on...the problem is that the cartridge will not eject. I pulled it out manually and notice that nothing at all happens when I press the eject button. I did notice one fuse (2 prong) in the back of the unit, and also noticed what looked like a plug in for maybe one more? I can't find anything on the web to tell me about the wiring of the unit to see if there is one missing or what. For now, I'm just leaving it out.

All Fixed!!!!

Well, after a bit of work, I finally got my problem fixed. Turned out to be the cd changer. The unit never worked since I got the car, and now I know why. There was a disk jammed in it that was causing the player to try to do someting which in turn was the culprit draining my battery. After some tweaking, I now have no drainage problem and my changer is working just fine. I can finally listen to cds in the car!! Thanks for all the help everyone!

How did you do it?

I have a 92 500e with the Becker Silverstone (POS) changer. It is so tempermental that I am about to trash it. I disconnected the battery to install a disconnect switch and now the cd is inoperative and I can't eject the cartridge. I have had this problem before, but of course did not eject the cartridge first (like an idiot or as an idiot - take your pick). I have tried plugging and unplugging and plugging it in whiole holding down the eject buttom (which worked for me in the past) but now I cannot get the thing to eject or play.

what I did with my trunk mounted silvertone cd changer, 93 600sel, was unmount it from it's vertical position, check the fuse on the bottm (mine was missing), check all the connections several times. It started working with a rest of the fuse. then, placed it horizontal on the trunk carpeting. Ran it trhough it's paces of changing tracks etc. So far, all seems ok. I have installed a 'Priority Start' battery protector that prevents battery from going below about 11.9 volts or so, just in case the cd changer goes bad. So far, have not had any problems. I had to cycle the cd holder cassete pak, in and out a few times to get it to seat right, as it had not been operating for quite sometime.

re...how did you do it?

I actually brute-forced the magazine out with a flathead screwdriver. It took a few minutes, but finally came out. That was then I notice way at the top there was a cd partway out of the main playing housing. I just reached up and slid it over to get it out. Once it was out, all was good. I did notice that the slip for disk one was missing one of the small plastic tabs the you push to slide the disk out. I'm thinking that may have caused the problem in the first place. So now I'm just not putting a disk in the first slot and all works just fine. Hope this helps!

batt drain

I had a 89 SL that had a chafed wire feeding the trunk lamp voltage backwards thru the high mounted stop lamp. I noticed it when I was in the garage with the lights out, just a faint glow!
It could be in the doors or other constant hot lines

The problem lies with the worm gear that ejects the CDpack. it comes off the shaft and does not eject any more. If you are really handy, and I mean "really"! You can disassemble the changer and put the worm gear back on the shaft, I was an electronics tech early in my life, and it is not an easy job, screws and wires that have to be re-dressed etc. I got it to work, you can also send it back to Becker, and they will rebuid it with some kind of warranty, check their web page.
I think you can get the mag out by slipping someting thin down the side and releasing the catch, and then pulling it up, I dont remember which side it was on

Found the little worm...

about 1" long and white - right? Was rattling around in the "box". I found it pretty easy to retieve the cartridge manually by sliding a thin piece of card board under the cassette and pulling with fingers on the top. The cardboard disengages the "catch". At least now I have the cd's back. Now, do I have the skill and patience to try to get into the "box" to replace the worm???

If your battery sat dead for any length of time even if fairly new it will never be the same ,it will probably hold a charge but will not be as good as one that never went low..................
