do a relay [like you described].

you get the creamic plug/socket with the relay set up daniel stern offers.
it does look like it could power the landing lights on the space shuttle though. pretty major indeed.

not sure if he sells just the plug/socket seperately. don't know why he wouldn't.

it's up to you on the bypass idea, my opinion- i wouldn't fool with it, definetly quicker to get the heavy duty socket.
