I purchased a 2003 E320 with approximately 3,000 miles. The car had been in an accident and incurred damage to the right rear quarter panel. The other associated damage was to the sub-frame, which was replaced. The repairs were completed and appear quite professional.

My problem involves the fuel gauge; it does not provide an accurate reading after ten minutes of driving. The gauge indicates the car is consuming fuel at a rate of approximately 10 to 12 miles gallon. However, when the ignition is switched off and the car is started again, it immediately returns to an accurate reading.

The local MBZ dealer believes there might be water damage to two computers located in the right rear, and this is causing the problem. First, I don't believe there was ever any water damage to the car, as the carpets nor any other component have any watermarks. Additionally, I can't believe MBZ would use two separate computers to track the fuel status in the car, nor do I see any in the right rear behind the carpet.


The dealer has asked the factory MBZ rep look into the situation, but has foreshadowed the cost of the two computers could be $8K! Again, very hard to imagine.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
