I keep very detailed fuel consumption records for my 85 300D, 177k miles.

At present, I am getting 23-24mpg and I drive a mix of 75% highway 25% city with the air-conditioning on. It rises to 24-25mpg or so if the a/c is off.

Best mileage I ever got was 26.1 this spring on a long trip. Worst was this winter when I got 21.5 a couple of times.

I don't know what kind of diesel mileage I get yet, but I'll let you all know when I've measured it! I think it's at least 20 miles/gallon.

How slow do you have to drive to get that kind of efficiency, Benzman? I'd buy a gasoline model if I knew I'd get efficiency like that!

I am getting 25/26 on the highway with my gasoline '95 E320, automatic. To get this milage I do not let the rpm get much above around 2500 (65 mph) and always use the cruise. I was quote surprised to get this kind of mileage and am pretty pleased with it. I will say that it feels pretty good when I kick it to pass and the engine gets "on the cam".

I have a '99 E300 with 18K miles and I get 33-35 MPG driving at 75 MPH on road trips and about 30 MPG in town. I live in Florida, so the A/C is on most of the time.
Great engine, the only time you know it's a diesel is when you fuel up!!

The '98 ML320 gets 21 MPG on road trips and 19 in town. (About 16 MPG towing a 21 ft boat.) It's not a diesel, but I wish it were!!

My '83 300D gets 25 MPG on trips running at 70-75 with the A/C on and 23 in town. It's a diesel and you know it all the time!!

When it was still running, I would get around 21-22mpg at around 80-90mph. approx. 3500-4000 rpm (A/C on)

I graphed my fuel consumption on the diesel for the last 2+ years. The average was 26.5 mpg. We live 13 miles from the nearest town so we do mostly highway 60 mph driving. It is slightly lower in the winter, probably warm-up time. Lots of variability due to foamy fill-ups with early shut-off. Max of 30 mpg - Min of 21 mpg. I just replaced the injectors and am hoping to due a little better over the next year.

Mine is probably a good worst-case example of city mileage. I've averaged 19.76 mpg over the past 11 months, but my drive to work is exactly two miles each way, and I probably have a good 400 lb load wherever I go (me, infant car seat, as well as a baby stroller, tool kit, and various fluids I carry in the trunk). On the one (mostly) highway trip I was able to get a real mpg figure I was over 25 mpg. Worst single tank was 14.5 mpg with a bad thermostat that wouldn't let the coolant warm up past 60 deg. celcius.

My (wife's) 300D gets about 20 or 21 in town, where it is driven most of the time, and around 24 on the highway last time I checked it.... I don't get to drive it much!

My 240D has been as high as 38, but that was two years ago on a long trip - all interstate, and no A/C running. The average is around 32, with half city/country and half highway driving.
