Wow! It certainly seems like a little bit of everything out there! My first adventure was a 1980 300sD. Grey with 270K on it. Experimented with a kit from grease car. $600 for the car, $80 for The kit. Ran great for about a year -6K mi Then slowly downhill. Put exhaust and alternator in. Could use radiator, battery and possibly a home. think I'm hooked, however.
2nd purchase was a 1985 300TD with 385K that I paid $1300 for in January. Looks great, 3rd seat, rms good, cd, sunroof, roof rack, hitch. All a guy could ask for but floors! she's hanging in, however. Put rear brakes and a starter in so far. I consider them both good deals! Hope you find one too.

Paid about $10 000 for the 2.3 16v and it had 200 000kms on it... i was screwed, the car looked in perfect condition till i owned it for a month and was forced to pay some top coin for repairs!(dont buy from Miracle AutoSales in Burnaby BC, canada... they will make you bend over and touch ur toes with your pants on the floor.)
And i paid $0 for my 250c. it was a gift... that is going to cost me alot of money to get into respectable shape... haha! so yes.. paying $0 for my 250c was forsure worth it.

In October I traded an inspected and running 1993 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer for a 1987 190E 2.6L and $100. The 190 runs and drives but needs a left rear fender and tail light. It has 122,000 miles and a salvage certificate. I'm happy with the deal but won't know for sure until the car is titled and driven.

More complete listing of MBs and cost

1987 190E 2.6 122k miles with salvage certificate traded with a 1993 Chevy Blazer

1988 190E 124k miles Given to me by my brother cost me $850 dollars to ship to my house

1990 300TE 4Matic given to me by my father. He took it from my mother. She really misses the car but he was happy to get rid of it and the problems.

95 E320

I did sort of a trade, I had an 01 expedition, starting to give me trouble, and I traded it for a 95 E320. Both had around 175,000 miles on them. I payed $15 for new reg tabs. The man put new tires on my expedition and sold it for $5995.00 , which is what he was asking for the E320. I believe it was a good deal for me as the increased fuel economy, the Mercedes is easier to work on, not to mention the Mercedes technology, and heated seats.

Got my 85 300DT for $1750 this year (2007).
Completely rust free body, two-tank WVO system, and my MB mechanic says the engine runs nice and strong for 287K miles.
As for drawbacks, it needed new tires, new fuel lines, trans adjustment, new hood release, and a stereo. I still need to get around to cleaning out the main fuel tank and figuring out some other minor quirks.

88 230TE Binz ambulance with 260k miles bought for $1450
High milage, but decent condition. I guess if I throw $1000 at it it will be good for a few years.
89 300E bought in 2001 for $1250 and gave a way to a friend when I moved
84 200T I forgot how much I paid for back in 99. Sold for about $1500 in 2000.

fuel filter

10 year old C280. Never changed fuel filter. 30 year old Chevy, never changed fuel filter. I don't think MB's need much attention. Of course change oil/filter every 6k miles. Car seems to work fine. The hardest use an MB can get is to let the kids drive one. Then you might want to check things out. My experience is that the MB is pretty maintenance free. What say you? Of course if you service your car at a dealer, these items will need to be replaced.and you pay a lot for this.
