signs a thermostat is going south?

What are signs that a thermostat may be going? My 560sl is running great but it appears that the temp never event gets to the 80. It usuallyl hovers around 60.

The temp in my 210 barely goes below 80.

Thanks!

FWIW, in hindsight, my thermostat was mostly open and my car would not reach operating temps for quite awhile. In the morning commute, though short, I would just get to 80C. When the thermostat finally broke, it broke closed and I overheated.

In replacing the thermostat, the brass bridge on the old one was broken in two.

Temperature on my 94 E320 started staying between 78-85 with outside temperature around 32.

Replaced the thermostat and now the temperture stays between 85 and 95.

It does not take long to change the thermostat, you will find many posts on this.

Where might I find the thermostat on the 107 engine?

on my 87 260E, does mercedes make two different thermostats with diff temp openings. I've replaced the thermostat and the thermostat read 75degrees on it. now my car always stays at 80degrees and the heater doesnt heat effectively. I asked the dealer and they said that it's the right thermostat.
is there another thermostat that might read 85 on it ?
or could it be a bad thermostat that I've purchased from the benz dealer ?

I think the correct thermostat for your car is an 87*C unit. If the dealer doesn't have one, I'm sure you could get it through fastlane here.

Look for the large radiator hose connection leading to the top of the engine. It is housed in the domed-shaped metal casing attached to the hose, probably held in with three 7mm bolts.

Easy removal and replacement, and a bit of coolant will spill out when you remove the casing (but it's ok).

T-stats run about $30, so it's a cheap investment whether it's bad or not...
