Is this a good idea?

A friend of mine has an 87 2.3 190E. It has over 300,000 miles and recently the tranny crapped out on him. The car will go into reverse but not forward, and there is a leak at the connection between the tranny and engine. He has decieded not to put in the money to repair it and rather to sell it cheaply ($150.00). I had the bright idea to buy the car and do the tranny work myself. I haven't bought the car yet, but would this be a good idea? or is a tranny swap a really hard thing to do? How much does a used 190E tranny cost? Any advice would be appreaciated. I would plan on selling the car for profit after the work was done.
Eric
