Is this a good idea?
A friend of mine has an 87 2.3 190E. It has over 300,000 miles and recently the tranny crapped out on him. The car will go into reverse but not forward, and there is a leak at the connection between the tranny and engine. He has decieded not to put in the money to repair it and rather to sell it cheaply ($150.00). I had the bright idea to buy the car and do the tranny work myself. I haven't bought the car yet, but would this be a good idea? or is a tranny swap a really hard thing to do? How much does a used 190E tranny cost? Any advice would be appreaciated. I would plan on selling the car for profit after the work was done.

Yeah Eric, go for it. its a great idea. Hey, my doctor said I need my in-groan toe nails removed, but I think I'll save a buck and just do it my self.

For 150?
Think of it this way. What else are you going to get for $150.00? As for the tranny rebuild, read this thread, it may just give you the insperation!!!
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=27603&highlight=ultimate+DIY But, as previously mentioned, before jumping in in rebuilding the trans, check it out, it may be a simple fix. (though with 300,000 miles?) Has the tranny ever been rebuilt before? Again, i would go for it! And if you fail, well, get another 190e and between the two of htem get one good one! Iggy
