Headlights, 82 240D

The left headlight on my 1982 240D burned out so I replaced it. Still wouldn't work. Bought another one, still wouldn't work on the high beam, so it's not the bulb. The high beam indicator light isn't working so I'm replacing it. I've never encountered this with a car before. Any ideas from anyone?
