Is there any way of removing the large chain rail, the one the tension braces against, without removing the head? This is on an 87 16V. Examined it last weekend and it doesn`t look possible. It has some wear/groves from the timing chain. I thought I have read in one of these posts that the large rail is fairly durable. Thankyou.

Basicly you can unclip the plastic part & just replace it. It is avail as spare part. With the front cover removed it will clear as long as the chain is completely removed!
