1993 Mercedes 190E high beam

Hi,

The right-side high beam on my 1993 190E is not working. Both headlights work when they're not in high-beam mode, but when I switch on the high beams, the right headlight goes out completely. What's the problem and how do I take care of it?

It's most likely the bulb.

Try swapping bulbs and see what does or does not happen.

I.e., the bulb contains two filaments. One can be burned out while the other still works. Still have to replace the bulb if that is the problem.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like it's just a simple problem (whew!), but I'm kind of a clueless chick so is replacing the bulb easy to do and can I do it myself without having to go to a mechanic? How do I open the headlight compartment to get to the bulb and replace it? Thanks again, guys.

No worries.

Replacing the light bulb is easy.

Just pop the hood and check out the back of the headlight assembly. Your headlights may or may not have a rear cover. if it does, it's easy enough to remove; just look for a couple of metal retaining clips on the top side.

Once the cover is off, you will have exposed the back of the reflector and the wiring. There will be 2 wiring connectors: 1 for the main headlight bulb and another for the foglight. Pull off the plug for the headlight and then release the metal wire that holds the bulb in place. ***Note: this step is for European spec headlights (1-pc glass on the front); if your car has North American headlights (the front lens is a combination of plastic and glass) the I think it's actually a plastic collar that you have to turn to release the bulb.***

Afer you've done all of that, all you have to do is pull the bulb out.

To install a new bulb, just follow the above steps in reverse. the bulb can only fit in one way and the plug that goes on the back of the light bulb will only fit one way as well.

Make sure that you don't touch the glass part of the bulb with your skin. The bulbs get quite hot and the oils from your skin will create hot-spots on the glass thereby shortening the life of the bulb. If you do happen to accidentally touch the glass, you can clean it with alcohol; but it's just best to avoid contact to begin with.

Good luck!

BTW, if you need 190E specific information, try www.190revolution.net. It's a site dedicated to the 190E.

Talking

How many forum members does it take to change a lightbulb?

4 to say use the search

2 to post links to prior posts on the topic

1 to complain about spelling and grammar in the original subject

1 to compain about someone using all caps

3 to post solutions that do not apply to the model at hand (usually me )

1 to rudely accuse those guys of being idiots

3 to defend the idiots, and accuse the other guy of being rude

1 to say they have a similar problem, and ask if they can upgrade to 500 watt bulbs.

1 to say he installed 500 watt bulbs and they work great!

12 to flame that guy, and rave about their E-codes

5 to ask what E-codes are and where they can buy them

3 to ask how to wire the E-codes

2 to ask how the wipers mount on the E-codes

3 to ask how they can enable the city lights

1 to ask how to setup the gee-whiz adjustable lights

1 to complain that this post should be moved to the lightbulb forum

1 to discover the post when it is 2 years old, and say that they just upgraded to 500 watt bulbs, and they are great!

3 to flame that guy, and rave about their E-codes

2 to say "use the search" because they believe this topic was covered a while back...
