I love my diesel. I'm going to just take that sucker right off and get better MPG. Pooh pooh, environment!

Just kidding. I'm going to be running biodiesel/SVO this fall, so I'll take it off then. No more baddies.

Probably better without cats, if you can work it that way

I LIKE that kind of thinking. If you don't mind the hassle of the cat removal/smog test/cat reinstallation, the car will definately run better without the cat the rest of the time, if a friend in Michigan with a 1989 SEC in Michigan, who runs his car without cats, is to be believed. There are no smog inspections in Michigan, so he can go without cats as long as he owns the car.
